19th Century Sterling Silver Filigree Fish Vinaigrette / Scent Pendant
A remarkable antique sterling silver vinaigrette dating to the 1800s, intricately fashioned in the form of a fish with beautifully detailed filigree work throughout. The body features individually worked scales, scrolling wirework, and an elaborate dimensional tail, giving the piece an almost lace-like appearance in silver.
The fish opens on a hinged lid to reveal a small interior compartment with its own decorative circular hinged cover. A fine silver chain connects the upper and lower sections, while a larger chain attached to the exterior allows the piece to be carried or suspended.
Vinaigrettes and scent containers such as this were personal accessories used during the 19th century, often holding aromatic substances or a small scented sponge. The unusually whimsical fish form combined with the exceptionally detailed silver filigree makes this a wonderful example of Victorian-era personal silver.
